Surge in Employment Indicates Rapid Growth of India's Electric Vehicle Sector
A recent report by CIEL HR Services has shed light on the remarkable growth of the electric vehicle (EV) industry in India, marked by a staggering 108% increase in job opportunities over the last two years. The report underscores Bengaluru as the epicenter of EV talent, hosting 62% of the total job postings, with Delhi, Pune, Coimbatore, and Chennai following suit.
Engineering roles dominate the EV sector, with functions like operations, sales, quality assurance, business development, IT, human resources, and marketing closely trailing behind. CIEL HR Services, a prominent recruitment and staffing company, compiled this data, emphasizing the industry's burgeoning job market.
The survey involved 52 enterprises, encompassing 15,700 employees, contributing to the report titled "Latest Employment Trends in EV Sector 2022." Over the past six months, leading EV companies have collectively hired 2,236 individuals, reflecting the sector's robust expansion.
The report also highlights the increasing presence of women in various roles within the industry, signaling a positive trend of diversity and inclusion. By 2030, the EV sector is expected to generate one crore (ten million) direct jobs, with an anticipated creation of about five crore (50 million) indirect jobs, according to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
However, the industry faces challenges, particularly a skill gap hindering its full potential. India's youth, constituting over 65% of individuals under 35, could propel the country to become a global skill powerhouse. Still, the EV sector is grappling with a shortage of technicians and engineers specialized in EV charging infrastructure.
To address this gap, strategic initiatives are crucial. The following approaches can help bridge the skill divide in the EV industry:
Education and Training Programs: Collaborate with universities, technical schools, and industry associations to establish specialized education and training programs covering battery technology, electric propulsion systems, software development, and automotive engineering.
Industry-Academia Collaboration: Foster strong partnerships between academia and industry through joint research projects, internships, and guest lectures by industry experts to align academic programs with industry needs.
Professional Development for Existing Workforce: Provide continuous training and professional development opportunities for existing automotive industry professionals, ensuring they stay updated on the latest EV advancements.
Apprenticeship Programs: Implement apprenticeship programs in collaboration with EV companies, allowing individuals to gain hands-on experience with EV technologies under the guidance of experienced professionals.
Collaboration with Vocational Schools: Partner with vocational schools to create specialized programs focusing on technical skills required in the EV industry, catering to roles such as technicians and electricians.
Online Learning Platforms: Utilize online learning platforms to offer accessible and flexible training modules, covering a wide range of courses from basic EV concepts to advanced engineering principles for individuals to upskill at their own pace.
